Schufa for expats
Practical guide for renters in Germany. Informational only, not legal advice.
Schufa is the best-known German credit report brand. Many landlords ask for it, but not every newcomer will already have one.
Explanation
If you are new to Germany, explain your situation briefly and honestly. Some landlords will still want other proof such as an employment contract, bank statements, or a guarantor.
What matters is not pretending you have a perfect local credit history when you do not. Clear explanation beats awkward silence.
German example
Da ich erst vor Kurzem nach Deutschland gezogen bin, ist meine Schufa-Historie noch begrenzt. Gern sende ich Ihnen stattdessen meinen Arbeitsvertrag, Einkommensnachweise und weitere Unterlagen zur Einordnung.
English translation
Because I moved to Germany only recently, my Schufa history is still limited. I would be happy to send my employment contract, proof of income, and further documents instead for context.
Common mistakes
- Assuming no Schufa automatically means no chance.
- Sending incomplete explanations that make the situation sound evasive.
- Treating Schufa as legal advice rather than one practical screening signal.
