Explanation
A useful German rental application letter is short, factual, and easy to scan. Start with the apartment, then state your employment or income situation, household size, preferred move-in date, and which requested documents you can provide.
Adapt the level of detail to the channel. An e-mail can carry a short paragraph, while a portal field may need only two or three sentences. The wording should stay consistent with your forms and supporting documents.
Do not oversell or invent certainty. Landlords usually care more about clear facts, document readiness, and fit than elaborate wording. If your employment is fixed-term or your Schufa history is limited, describe that accurately instead of copying a claim that does not apply.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, ich bewerbe mich hiermit für die Wohnung in [Adresse / Lage]. Ich bin als [Beruf] bei [Arbeitgeber] tätig und suche die Wohnung für einen [Ein-/Zwei-]Personen-Haushalt. Ein Einzug wäre für mich ab dem [Datum] möglich. Die von Ihnen angeforderten Unterlagen, darunter [nur tatsächlich vorhandene Unterlagen], kann ich Ihnen gern zur Verfügung stellen. English translation
Dear Sir or Madam, I am applying for the apartment at [address / area]. I work as a [profession] at [employer] and am looking for the apartment for a [one-/two-]person household. I could move in from [date]. I would be happy to provide the documents you requested, including [only documents you actually have]. I would appreciate a reply or a viewing appointment. Kind regards, [first and last name].

Short version for a rental portal
Guten Tag, ich interessiere mich für die Wohnung in [Lage]. Ich bin als [Beruf] tätig, suche für einen [Ein-/Zwei-]Personen-Haushalt und könnte ab dem [Datum] einziehen. Die angeforderten Unterlagen kann ich gern bereitstellen. Ich freue mich über einen Besichtigungstermin.
Adapt the facts to your situation
Permanent employee
Ich bin unbefristet als [Beruf] bei [Arbeitgeber] beschäftigt und verfüge über ein regelmäßiges monatliches Einkommen.
Use “unbefristet” only when your employment contract is genuinely permanent.
Fixed-term employee
Ich bin bis zum [Datum] als [Beruf] bei [Arbeitgeber] beschäftigt. Gern sende ich Ihnen meinen Arbeitsvertrag und aktuelle Einkommensnachweise.
State the end date accurately and offer only the supporting evidence you can provide.
Student or guarantor-supported application
Ich studiere [Fach] an der [Hochschule]. Als Einkommens- beziehungsweise Finanzierungsnachweis kann ich [Nachweis] vorlegen; zusätzlich liegt eine Bürgschaft von [Person] vor.
Remove the guarantor sentence unless a real guarantor has agreed and the document is ready.
New to Germany without established Schufa history
Da ich erst seit [Monat/Jahr] in Deutschland lebe, ist meine Schufa-Historie noch begrenzt. Als Nachweise kann ich [Arbeitsvertrag / Einkommensnachweise / weitere angeforderte Unterlagen] vorlegen.
Explain the situation directly; do not imply that a landlord must accept substitute evidence.
Check before you send
- The address, contact name, household size, and move-in date match the listing and your forms.
- Employment type, income wording, and contract dates are accurate.
- Every document mentioned is available and appropriate to share at this stage.
- You removed all brackets, unused variants, and claims copied from the examples.
Common mistakes
- Writing a life story instead of a short application letter.
- Using casual German when the listing reads formal.
- Mentioning documents you do not actually have ready yet.
